This month, the Belmont Hotel Leicester City Centre.
Near-by attractions.
This luxurious, historic, Victorian city centre hotel is connected to just about everything. The famous Leicester Tigers Rugby club is only 10 minutes walk away, 10 minutes further is the home of Leicester City football club, the Walkers stadium. A few hundred yards in the other direction is De Montfort Halls, which used to be THE place for pop and rock groups to visit in the 60's 70's and early 80's. The Beatles performed there 2 or 3 times, but the Rolling Stones chose the now demolished Granby Halls, also only 5 minutes away from the Belmont, when they came to perform there 'last' world tour in 1992.
De Montfort Halls is now used for classical concerts and Brass Band competitions because of its tremendous acoustics, and of course it has Panto at Christmas. Close-by is Leicester University which is enjoying its 50th anniversary. Parts of Leicester University are very close to the Belmont Hotel, with a number of Schools including the department of Criminology on New Walk and the Department of Mass Communication on De Montfort St. Perhaps the New Walk is the most important aspect of where the Belmont Hotel is situated. This lovely ancient promenade follows the line of the old Roman Road down into the centre of the city Leicester. It is a pleasure to stroll down, in a Northerly direction, passing the Leicester City Museum. Continuing down New Walk to the magnificent Town Hall and the Town Hall Square which is in the centre of the Shopping Area, only five minutes walk from the Belmont Hotel.

Belmont Hotel details

The Belmont Hotel, Leicester.Details and room information.
The Belmont is a stylish, historic Victorian hotel located in the heart of Leicester city, close to the Highcross shopping centre and Curve theatre. The hotel is nestled in a green and leafy conservation area known as New Walk.

This unique family run hotel has been welcoming visitors for 75 years with imaginative fresh food, individually styled rooms, and the warm welcome they have become renowned for.

The Hotel has undergone extensive refurbishment throughout the ground floor, and our ongoing program delivered a collection of fantastic, luxurious rooms in 2008. Everything has been done with a considerate eye, designed to compliment the stylish Victorian architecture of the building, constructed in the 1860s as part of a speculative development known as New Walk.

The Belmont forms an integral part of the lovely conservation area, originally known as Queens Walk. The 200 year old walkway runs from the old race course (Now Victoria park) right into the centre of this exciting and evolving East Midlands city. Owned by the Bowie family for almost 75 years it provides great service and luxury accommodation, rooms with comfort and style, key qualities that have set The Belmont apart from the competition.

The hotel now has 75 rooms varying in style from modern to traditional, and designed to offer accommodation with a touch of luxury. Great food is provided by head chef Sean Cullen and his team with a variety of dining options, including our sunny terrace in the summer. Jamie's lounge bar and Cherry's, the hotel restaurant, Sean's ethos is to supply good honest food, and he sources a large amount from local suppliers, preferring their attention to detail and consistent quality.

Jamie's lounge is the heart of the hotel, busy with conference delegates and local business people by day, in the evening a more relaxed environment prevails with cocktails available and bistro style ambiance.

Whether you are in Leicester on business or for a relaxing break there are a range of options to suit everyone, from the stunning state of the art Curve theatre, to the undercover market with hundreds of stalls. If it's shopping you're after Highcross is Leicester's new 350 million pound shopping quarter with a vast array of retailers including many of the premium brands. There are a broad selection of coffee shops and a cosmopolitan feel to this regenerating environment, with the National Space centre, the Highcross shopping centre, the Curve theatre and a host of other attractions Leicester really is a top destination.

The Belmont is located close to Train Station, a 3 minute walk, which is 4 hours from Paris, Via St Pancras and Eurostar, and 55mins from London on the fast train. Birmingham is just under an hour away, and Nottingham less than 30 mins.

The buildings that the Belmont Hotel occupies were all built by a man called William Rushin between 1862 and 1865 as part of the rapid growth of Victorian Leicester. When first built they sat in green fields alongside the famous New Walk, originally the Roman road connecting Ratae, Leicester, with Colchester, which the Town Council, in its wisdom, declared a pedestrian thoroughfare in 1785, believed to be the first of its kind in England.
Belmont House, on De Montfort St was built as a girls school, but was used for a number of other purposes until Rachel Bowie, the wife of a successful Scottish mining engineer, bought it in 1934. Since then it has been run as a hotel by succeeding generations of the Bowies, growing from 8 rooms to nearly 80, and starting as a B and B, to now being highly rated by the AA.
New Walk is a delightful route to stroll into the Shopping centre and the Open Air Market which is one of the largest permanent open air markets in Europe and has been in the centre of Leicester for a thousand years. St Stevens, the church opposite the hotel, has an interesting history having been moved there brick by brick in the 1890's from a site next to the station. Further down New Walk is the Leicester Museum, built by Joseph Hansom in 1834, and responsible for firing the imagination of a young David Attenborough.
Belmont house and Belmont Villas, as the houses leading up New Walk were known would have been quite posh houses in Victorian Leicester and indeed there is a Blue Plaque on the hotel celebrating Earnest Gimson, who lived here in the 1870's and was visited by his mentor William Morris on a number of occasions.
